57% of college athletes struggle with life after sports. We're changing the stats.

Our Purpose

The end of competitive sport is inevitable for  98%  of collegiate athletes.

Transitioning out of athletics, however, presents diverse challenges.  Athletes risk being entirely consumed by shifts in their identity, routine, nutrition, body image, physical fitness, and career if they do not have the right support system in place.

At  AFTUR  , we’re building an institutional athletic transition infrastructure to support collegiate athletes in their movement from sport into the rest of their lives. Our suite of workshops and support services, including a mobile software that connects former and current collegiate athletes, will be the first to operationalize  Nancy Schlossberg’s Transition Theory  , one of the leading frameworks in athletic transition research.

Transition Theory views transition not as a single event, but rather a   process  with distinct phases that require tailored support:

Moving In

Entering a new situation, role, or environment, which requires adjustment and preparation.

Moving Through

Often a "neutral zone" of confusion, testing new roles, building routines, and integrating changes into one's life.

Moving Out

Ending a previous role, routine, or relationship, and integrating new experiences and learning.

I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition...maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution- Serena Williams
